Can dogs eat Okara?

Okara(おから)

Safe to feed

A tofu-making byproduct with plenty of soybean fiber.

Safe to feed

Fresh okara with the water removed — a powder extremely dense in fiber.

88 kcal per 100 g (raw)

333 kcal per 100 g (dried)

What kind of food is this?

The soybean pulp left over from making tofu. Per 100g: 88kcal, 6.1g protein, and 11.5g fiber.

It keeps part of the soybean's protein and fat along with the fiber. Unlike tofu, its role lies in the fiber it retains.

Dried soybean pulp from tofu making. Fiber is 43.6g per 100g — nearly four times as concentrated as fresh okara. It has 23.1g protein, 310mg calcium, and 150mg magnesium.

A small amount of powder adds soybean fiber, but with the water removed, at the same weight it is nothing like fresh okara in concentration.

How to serve

raw — Start with a small amount. It is high in dietary fiber, so the amount can affect stool condition.

dried — Start with a small amount, and serve it in a form that provides water as well. It is high in dietary fiber, so larger amounts can make stools loose or, conversely, hard.

When you have these care goals

Gut & stool care — High in dietary fiber.

In food-energetics terms

In food energetics this is classified as "neutral." It neither warms nor cools the body.

(Food energetics is a long-standing idea of supporting the body through everyday meals. Treat it as one extra hint alongside the nutrition numbers.)
