Can dogs eat Kiwifruit?

Kiwifruit(キウイ)

With care

A fruit that contains vitamin C and fiber, plus actinidin, a protein-digesting enzyme.

51 kcal per 100 g

What kind of food is this?

Per 100g: 51 kcal, 2.6g fiber, and 300mg potassium.

Its standout feature is actinidin, a protein-digesting enzyme. It breaks proteins into smaller pieces and is also known for tenderizing meat. On the other hand, some dogs react to this enzyme by pawing at their mouth or drooling more.

Kiwifruit is also known for its vitamin C. Vitamin C is involved in antioxidant defense and collagen synthesis, though healthy dogs can make it in their own bodies.

How to serve

Remove the skin and use only the flesh. The first time, start with a small amount and watch for a reaction.

When feeding it for the first time

With kiwi — and any new ingredient — start with a very small amount and avoid adding another new ingredient on the same day; this makes it easier to pin down the cause afterward. If two are added at once, it becomes hard to tell which one caused a reaction.

If it does not seem to agree with your dog, fruit is not something you need to force into the diet.

In food-energetics terms

In traditional food energetics it is classified as "cold" — considered strongly cooling and often chosen in hot weather. For dogs prone to getting chilled, it is safer to keep amounts small.

(Food energetics is a long-standing idea of supporting the body through everyday meals. Treat it as one extra hint alongside the nutrition numbers.)
