Can dogs eat Strawberry?

Strawberry(いちご)

Safe to feed

A light, water-rich fruit that also provides vitamin C and red polyphenols.

31 kcal per 100 g

What kind of food is this?

At 31kcal per 100g, this is the lightest fruit listed here. It is high in water, and its carbohydrate is on the low side for a fruit.

Strawberries are known as a vitamin C-rich fruit. Vitamin C is involved in collagen production and antioxidant systems. That said, dogs can make vitamin C in their own bodies, so unlike for people it is not a vitamin that must come from food.

The red color also involves plant pigments such as anthocyanins. A light fruit that adds water and plant compounds.

How to serve

Remove the leafy top before use.

Strawberries and xylitol

Xylitol is known in dogs as a substance linked to a sudden drop in blood sugar. It is said to occur naturally in some fruits, including strawberries, but the amounts involved are on a different scale from xylitol added as a sweetener to gum, tablets, and similar products for people.

What to check most carefully are gum and tablets made for people, and sweets labeled as sugar-free. If your dog gets into any of these, note how much and when, and consult your regular veterinary clinic.

In food-energetics terms

In food energetics this is classified as "cold." It is considered strongly cooling, so it is often chosen in hot weather. For dogs that tend to run cold, keeping it modest is safer.

(Food energetics is a long-standing idea of supporting the body through everyday meals. Treat it as one extra hint alongside the nutrition numbers.)
