What kind of food is this?
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in foods as a sugar substitute. In dogs it can trigger a sharp release of insulin, causing blood sugar to drop dramatically. With larger amounts, effects on the liver have also been reported.
It appears less in whole foods than in processed products: gum, throat lozenges, toothpaste, sugar-free sweets, and medicine syrups.
How to spot it on labels
Besides being listed as "xylitol" in the ingredients, it can be found in products labeled "sugarless," "zero sugar," or "tooth-friendly."
For your dog's dental care, do not repurpose products made for people — choose from products sold for dogs.
If your dog may have ingested some, keeping the product's bag or bottle on hand will help when you consult the clinic.
