Can dogs eat Aloe?

Aloe(アロエ)

Do not feed

Never give this to dogs. The yellow sap just under the leaf skin contains substances that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

What kind of food is this?

Just under the skin of an aloe leaf is a layer of yellow sap. This sap and the leaf contain anthraquinones such as aloin (substances that make the intestines work hard and loosen the stool), as well as saponins. When dogs eat aloe, they may vomit, have diarrhea, or seem low on energy.

On the other hand, the clear, jelly-like inner part of the leaf (the gel) is considered edible. But the yellow sap easily gets onto the gel when it is cut from the leaf, and separating them cleanly at home is hard, so BT-Throb lists aloe as a food not to give.

The aloe in aloe yogurt is the gel

The aloe in store-bought aloe yogurt is the inner part of the aloe vera leaf (the gel). In Japan, the ingredient label describes it with words like "inner leaf part." If your dog only licks what is left in the cup, there is little concern from the aloe itself. Because it contains sugar or sweeteners, it is not something to give as a meal or a treat.

Watch out for potted aloe too
Dogs sometimes chew on aloe grown at home. After eating it, their urine may turn reddish, according to reports.
