Can dogs eat Malabar spinach?
Malabar spinach(つるむらさき)
With care
A mucilaginous leafy green with magnesium and calcium. Boiling and discarding the water reduces its oxalate.
Safe to feed
These numbers reflect oxalate reduced by boiling and discarding the water.
11 kcal per 100 g (raw)
12 kcal per 100 g (boiled & drained)
What kind of food is this?
A summer leafy green that turns sticky when chopped. Magnesium is 67mg per 100g, about 3 times the average of the vegetables we list, and calcium is 150mg.
Magnesium supports energy metabolism and muscle and nerve function; calcium supports bones, muscles, and nerves.
It is also an oxalate-containing green, though. Think of it as a food with both a mineral upside and an oxalate caution.
Malabar spinach with its cooking water discarded. 12kcal per 100g. A summer leafy green that turns sticky when chopped; calcium is 180mg, more than double the average of the vegetables we list, and along with beta-carotene it holds up well after boiling.
While oxalate leaches out into the water, some water-soluble nutrients such as potassium and magnesium are also lost.
If you serve it with the cooking liquid, the 'raw' tab is closer to reality.
How to serve
Oxalates dissolve in water, so to reduce them, boil and discard the cooking water. If your dog has a history of calcium oxalate stones, talk with your vet about how to feed this.
